Eunhee Ryu (Gyorgy, Hungary), who gave South Korea’s women’s handball team a crucial first win, has been named one of the International Handball Federation’s (IHF) 10 players to watch in the women’s competition at the Paris Olympics.

The IHF has selected 10 men and 10 women to be featured on its website as players to watch in the handball competition at the Paris Olympics, which began on Friday.

“One of the best right backs in the world,” the IHF said of Ryu Eun-hee, who played for Paris 92, the team that hosted the Paris Olympics, and has been playing for Hungarian club Gyorgy since 2021.

It also replayed a clip from the 2022 Asian Championship final against Japan, in which Ryu scored 19 unanswered goals to lead South Korea to a 34-29 victory.

On June 26, Ryu scored six goals to lead South Korea to a 23-22 victory over Germany in the first game of Group A of the women’s pool play at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Ryu had six goals, two assists, and one steal on the day to lead her team to victory alongside Kang Kyung-min (SK), who had six goals and seven assists.

Ryu Eun-hee, the only European League player on the Korean national team, made an unheralded contribution by dragging the opposing defense around and creating opportunities for her teammates.

In addition to Ryu, six of the 10 players to watch are from Group A, including Stine Offtedal (Norway), Sandra Toft (Denmark), Ana Gross (Slovenia), Jamina Robert (Sweden), and Emily Volk (Germany).

The IHF used the word “shock” to describe the first day’s results, which included two upsets: South Korea rallying from a four-goal deficit to beat Germany in the second half and Sweden’s 32-28 victory over favorite Norway in Pool A.

South Korea head coach Henrik Signell (SWE) rated Pool A as Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Slovenia, in that order, ahead of the start of the tournament.
