‘Incheon’s Living Legend’ Stefan Mugosa (31-Incheon United) is back.
Mugosa made his K League debut in Incheon’s colors in 2018. He was an explosive goalscorer, scoring 68 goals and 10 assists in 129 league games over five seasons. Starting in 2019, he was named to the season’s Best 11 for three consecutive years. In 2022, he scored 14 goals in the first 18 games of the season. “I have a dream after coming to Incheon. I want to be a legend in the team, and I want to be a helpful player. I will stay in the K League 1 with Incheon.”
He left for Japan’s J-League 1 Vissel Kobe in June last year. Vissel Kobe triggered his buyout clause (guaranteed minimum transfer fee). However, he only made eight official appearances for Kobe, including five league games. It was a tough time. Mugosa returned to Incheon. He made his official comeback on June 6 against Jeonbuk Hyundai in the Hana OneQ K League 1 2023 away match at Jeonju World Cup Stadium. However, he didn’t record an offensive point in that game.
Mugosa returned home on the 13th. He started the home match against Daegu FC at the Incheon Football Stadium. Ahead of the match, Incheon head coach Cho Sung-hwan said, “This is Mugosa’s second league match. It shouldn’t be longer. We have supporters from home, and the home fans are watching. We’re having a lot of fun here in Japan. I hope it will carry over to the stadium.”
On this day, Mugosa was on the pitch with Gerso. They were formidable. Mugosa exploded for a comeback goal in the 22nd minute with the game tied at 0-0. He finished a pass from Jerso with a powerful mid-range shot. It was the first time in 417 days that Mugosa had scored in an Incheon shirt. He scored a hat trick against Gangwon FC at home on June 22 last year.
On his toes, Mugosa helped set up Jerso’s goal. It was in first-half stoppage time, with his team up 2-0, and he shook Daegu’s defense with a passing play with Jerso. Mugosa read Jerso’s timing and connected with a sharp pass. Jerso slotted home Mugosa’s pass. Incheon ended the first half with a 3-0 lead.
Mugosa, who cooked up the goal, went to the bench in the 22nd minute of the second half after being replaced by Chun Sung-hoon. He ended the game to a rousing ovation from the Incheon fans. Incheon won the match 3-1.
After the game, Mugosa said, “It was a great game, and I’m really happy to get a goal and an assist, especially coming back like this and playing my first home game. It was a great night for my teammates and the fans. It’s a team effort. Thank you to my teammates, the coaching staff, the people who believed in me, and the home fans. It’s a night that made me realize that I love this place again. The last game against Jeonbuk was really difficult. It rained a lot. It was a painful game to be honest. I wasn’t happy because we lost. For this home game, I prepared more specifically. I told many people that Incheon has made a lot of progress. I prepared harder to keep my word. But I’m still not in perfect shape. My teammates helped me a lot. They helped me a lot around me. I just did my part to score goals,” he said.
“It’s true that there are more players who can score goals besides me. I still feel like they’re holding me back a lot. But I’m happy that they have the ability to score goals. Even if I don’t score, someone can score and we can win. I can even score a goal with their help. I think that’s the biggest difference between before and now. I’d say I’m confident in scoring goals, and I think if I improve my form, it will come. In the end, I may need help from my teammates. I’m grateful for that. It’s a team effort. That’s why playing football here is fun and enjoyable. By the way, I have to mention the defense. We haven’t conceded many goals in recent games. The role of the defense is very important. We’ve become a team that can score goals. I think we can win because we have the defense to back it up.”
As for the 26 players from the Montenegro Jamboree who came to the stadium today, he said: “I felt a sense of responsibility because they came, they came from my hometown. I was able to invite them to the stadium. Thank you for coming to the stadium, cheering for my team, cheering for me. Tomorrow we go to Montenegro. I wish them a safe flight. I’m very happy that we played a good game in my first home match back. The club also gave me a gift, gave me the opportunity to be with them on the pitch. I’m grateful. They said they like Korea. I said, ‘Of course, my other home’. Thank you,” he said.
