Former Tottenham youth player dreams of reuniting with son after horrific car crash
Marcus Edwards (Sporting CP), who has been linked with a return to Tottenham, has been involved in a frightening accident.
According to the UK’s The Sun, Edwards was traveling to a training session on Sept. 29 (ET) when his car overturned. Police, firefighters, and paramedics rushed to the scene, and Edwards was reportedly shaken but not seriously injured.
The driver of the other vehicle is also said to be unharmed. The accident occurred in the Atalaia neighborhood, north of Lisbon. The exact circumstances of the accident are not known.
Sporting will host Atalanta of Italian Serie A on Dec. 1 at 2:45 a.m. in the fifth leg of their 2023-2024 Europa League Group D matchup. Sporting was scheduled to hold its final training session in Lisbon.
Edwards’ accident delayed the training session. Club officials were rushed to the scene of the accident. Luckily, Edwards was unharmed and only suffered a cut on his chest.
Portugal’s Correio de Maya recently reported that “Tottenham are planning a surprise move to bring Edwards back to the club using a secret clause”. Edwards has already been linked with a return to the club after scoring a goal against Spurs in the European Champions League last season.
Born in 1998, Edwards came through the Tottenham youth ranks. He earned a first-team contract in 2016 and made one appearance in the League Cup.
But that was it: he didn’t play a single game in the English Premier League (EPL). He dreamed of being the “next Son Heung-min,” but was overshadowed by Son.
Edwards’ potential has exploded since his move to Sporting last January. He has 18 goals and 21 assists in 83 appearances for Sporting. His best attribute is his explosive speed.
Tottenham let Edwards go for no transfer fee. They still hold a 35% share of the transfer fee.
Sporting have set aside £52 million for Edwards’ ‘buy-out’ clause. Tottenham can sign him for £34 million, minus the 35%.
Edwards, who has represented England at every age group, would love to return to the EPL and reunite with Son Heung-min.
