‘Partner of Kim Min-jae’ Bayern Munich CB is No. 1 release candidate
Bayern Munich will have to offload a center back if they sign Jonathan Tah.
According to German outlet Bavarian Football, “Tah is the center back Munich are looking for. The Bavarians want Tah to become the leader of the Munich defense, which currently has Mathias De Ligt and Eric Dier as its first-choice center backs. However, in order to sign Tah, they’ll have to sell a center back first. Dayo Upamecano is the favorite,” the publication reported.
Munich have had several of the best center backs in the league. With the addition of Kim Min-jae ahead of this season, they now have De Ligt, Upamecano, and Kim Min-jae. Leading up to the start of the season, it was widely expected that Kim and De Ligt would pair up.
As German outlet Kicker wrote, “Bayern Munich’s main backline in 2023-24 will most likely be Kim and De Ligt. Upamecano will have to win the hearts of the coaching staff with his skills to make it into the best 11.”
However, contrary to expectations, Kim and Upamecano have been able to work well together. The duo worked well together and helped secure Munich’s defense, especially with Thomas Tuchel’s trust. Tuchel showed his affection for Kim as soon as he joined the team.
“I think he can be a leader,” Tuchel said. She’s in a new country and has to learn a new language. Currently, she is trying to learn German. She is also communicating with her teammates in English,” he said, praising her adaptability.
Suddenly, there was a change in Munich. Upamecano and De Ligt were injured. The only center back left was Kim Min-jae. Munich tried to sign Jerome Boateng to reinforce the center back position, but the deal fell through. As a result, Kim had a grueling schedule. Kim has consolidated his position by maintaining a good defense.
Munich strengthened at center back in the winter transfer window. Raphael Varane and Takehiro Tomiyasu were linked, but the Bavarians opted for Dyer. Dyer had been given little opportunity at Tottenham Hotspur, and Tuchel appreciated his versatility. Recently, Dier has been playing as a center back, but his defensive midfield background means he can also play in the number six position.
Dier’s arrival didn’t change the Munich defense. However, as time went on, Tuchel opted for a center back pairing of Dier and De Ligt instead of Kim and Upamecano. Kim Min-jae and Upamecano were relegated to the bench.
On a brighter note, Tuchel is leaving Munich at the end of the season. “Munich has agreed to terminate the contract of Tuchel, which was due to expire on June 30, 2025, on June 30, 2024,” the club announced on its website.
Tuchel took over at Munich last season. Tuchel set his sights on a treble upon his arrival. However, despite Tuchel’s lofty ambitions, the Bavarians failed to fulfill their promise. They were eliminated in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarterfinals by Manchester City.
They lost to Freiburg in the DFB-Pokal quarterfinals. They 토토 also won the league by a narrow margin. Dortmund led Munich at the top of the table, but Munich won the final match and Dortmund lost to Mainz to finish on top.
Munich’s goal this season was also a treble. However, they lost to third division Saarbrücken in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. The treble was out of the question, and all that remained was the league and UCL. Even that is likely to be a failure. The league was won by Leverkusen.
Leverkusen started the season on a high note and went undefeated. They emerged as a contender to Munich, the reigning Bundesliga champions. Leverkusen leapfrogged Munich to the top of the league. At the beginning of the season, it wasn’t clear that Leverkusen’s surge would last.
But Leverkusen had no intention of losing, and they ended the first half of the Bundesliga season at the top of the league and within striking distance of Munich. Leverkusen and Munich met at a crucial time, and the result was a 3-0 victory for Leverkusen. Leverkusen didn’t lose a single game after that. While Leverkusen were riding high, Munich began to falter and the gap between the two sides grew to unbearable proportions.
In the 28th round of the Bundesliga, Munich’s 2-3 loss to Heidenheim and Leverkusen’s 1-0 win over Union Berlin widened the gap to 16 points. With six games remaining before the league finale, Leverkusen needed just one win to clinch the title early. Leverkusen clinched the title with a 5-0 thrashing of Werder Bremen in round 29.
Munich is through to the UCL quarterfinals. One more step and it’s the final, but it doesn’t look easy. Munich’s quarterfinal opponent is Real Madrid. Given Munich’s poor form this season, the big boys are a scary prospect. On top of that, Real Madrid has gotten even stronger with the addition of Jude Bellingham.
On the other hand, Tah is a key center back for Leverkusen. At 195 centimeters, Tah has a big physicality. His physicality allows him to compete with opponents. He also has quick feet, reaching a top speed of 35.81 kilometers per hour. He“s a good center back because he”s also strong in the build-up that the current game requires.
However, Leverkusen aren”t going to take him lightly. Leverkusen want to keep him because he”s a necessary part of their third back line. Also, the transfer fee is an issue. Munich are willing to spend up to €20 million, but Leverkusen are likely to ask for €40 million. Munich are likely to sell the center-back to raise funds and clean up their squad. Upamecano is currently Munich’s top priority for release.
