Men’s Basketball in the 2024 Olympics Will Not Include Russia
The Russian men’s basketball team will not be able to compete in upcoming Olympic qualifying tournaments, according to the international governing body of basketball, effectively preventing the team from taking part in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Sports organizations have continued to forbid Russian athletes from competing in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Russia’s world ranking was sufficient for them to participate in Olympic pre-qualifying competitions this year, but Bulgaria will take its place as the next-highest-ranked team from Europe, according to a statement from FIBA that cited recommendations from the IOC.
Although Belarus was also considered in the IOC’s decision, neither the men’s nor women’s competitions are open to the nation because of its low ranking.
According to reports, Bulgaria’s team took the place of the Russian one. The national teams of Russia and Belarus were formerly barred from competing in events held under the organization’s auspices.
“Following the IOC recommendations on the participation of athletes with a Russian or Belarusian passport in international competitions published on 28 토토 March, the FIBA Executive Committee decided not to allow the registration of the Russian men’s team in Olympic pre-qualification tournaments.”
Other sports organizations, like the Polish Fencing Federation, which postponed a women’s foil competition earlier this month, have also called off Olympic qualifying competitions because Russian and Belarusian athletes were permitted to compete. Similar cancellations were made by the fencing federations of Germany and France.
Last month, the International Ice Hockey Federation declared that it will uphold its ban on Russian and Belarusian teams and forbid them from competing in upcoming competitions.
Due to their suspension from the World Cup and EuroBasket qualification last year, the Russian women’s team previously failed to qualify. The men’s and women’s teams are ineligible to field Belarus.
The tennis association has joined the U.S. Open, which said last year that it would accept competitors from either nation so as to avoid holding “the individual athletes accountable for their actions and decisions of their governments.”
Russian and Belarusian athletes are now prohibited from competing in international athletic competitions as a result of the IOC’s first decision to do so. Since then, the IOC has changed its mind and announced it will permit Russian and Belarusian athletes to 사설토토 compete under a neutral flag. In a statement released in February, representatives from more than 30 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the host nation France, stated that they “do not agree” with the IOC’s change of heart.
More than 300 former and current international fencers urged for the ban to be upheld, claiming that their participation would be “a catastrophic error,” and individual athletes have also criticized the decision.
