Pape Sarri is set to sign a new long-term contract with Tottenham Hotspur.
Fabrizio Romano, a journalist familiar with European soccer news, tweeted on Sunday with his trademark “Here we go” and added: “Sarri will sign a new contract with Tottenham until 2030. He is an important player for Tottenham and has been promised a pay rise and an agreement has been reached.”
“He will sign a new contract and be ready for the Africa Cup of Nations because he is the right player to play for his country, Senegal. Destiny Udoji is the next player to be re-signed.”
The 2002-born midfielder joined Tottenham in the summer of 2021 after spending his youth career at FC Metz. He was sent out on loan shortly after his arrival, before returning to the club last summer. However, he was not given much of a chance under Antonio Conte. He made 11 league appearances last season, but only 212 minutes of playing time.
While he wasn’t a mainstay, he was very popular with Korean fans. This was due to the fact that he was seen getting close to Son Heung-min through various means. Tottenham’s official account showed Son taking care of Sarr, while Sarr’s social media videos showed Son playing pranks on him.
Heung-min actively helped Saar adjust to Spurs. In a past interview, he said, “He’s a really nice guy. From the first day we met, we got along well. We have a good friendship. He helps me a lot, gives me advice on and off the pitch. I’m very grateful. He’s one of my favorite people on the team,” he said.
In the pre-season, Son’s enthusiasm for the team made headlines. The Spurs kicked off their preseason tour in Perth, Australia, in July. During their first meeting after the end of the 2022-23 season, Sarri made a big splash by hugging Son Heung-min. Despite their 10-year age difference, the pair have a great relationship.
Sarr’s position changed when Enze Postecoglou took over as head coach, and he quickly became a regular starter. Along with Yves Bissouma and James Maddison, he has developed into a key resource in the midfield. He is a box-to-box midfielder with a lot of energy.
For this performance, Tottenham will reward him with a new contract. Weekly wagesAccording to statistical outlet Capology, Sarri earns just £10,000 a week. That’s a whopping 19 times more than Son Heung-min, who earns £190,000 a week. He is the third lowest paid player on the Spurs roster. Spurs plan to increase his weekly wages by re-signing him.
After signing a new contract, he will likely be out of the club for a while. This is because he has been called up to represent Senegal at the 2023 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. However, after scoring the game-winning goal against Bournemouth on March 31, he was forced off with a hamstring injury.
Fortunately, the injury is reportedly not deep. Romano said, “The injury is optimistic. It is not expected to be serious. A lot of tests will be needed, but he is still expected to travel with the Senegalese national team for the Nations Cup.”
